{"id":4104,"date":"2019-07-04T11:38:08","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cwa9003.org\/?p=4104"},"modified":"2019-07-04T11:38:12","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:38:12","slug":"new-tentative-agreements-at-att","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cwa9003.org\/?p=4104","title":{"rendered":"New Tentative Agreements at AT&#038;T"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">Bargaining and Mobilization Update <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AT&amp;T Midwest,\nAT&amp;T Legacy T, and AT&amp;T Mobility Puerto Rico<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CWA bargaining teams have\nreached tentative agreements with AT&amp;T&#8217;s Midwest and AT&amp;T Legacy T\nunits, including AT&amp;T Legacy T in Puerto Rico, and AT&amp;T Mobility in\nPuerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreements come after a\nlong campaign to raise public awareness of CWA members&#8217; concerns, particularly\naround job security. Most recently, CWA issued a series of reports highlighting\nservice quality issues in the Midwest and, last week, members of Congress, led\nby Rep. Darren Soto (D-Fla.), wrote a letter expressing concern that AT&amp;T\ncontinue to provide good jobs in Puerto Rico as the island continues to recover\nfrom Hurricane Maria. The new Midwest agreement provides for additional call\ncenter jobs and contains a commitment to discuss contracted out work and the\nPuerto Rico agreement contains a guarantee that customer calls will continue to\nbe handled on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Details of the proposed\ncontracts are being provided to the locals&#8217; leadership, and contract\nexplanation meetings are being scheduled prior to the ratification vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\"> Join a CWA Town Hall Call Next Week on How to End Offshoring <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Big corporations are sending\nmore and more of our jobs overseas to boost their profits at the expense of\nworking people, but we&#8217;re fighting back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CWAers all across the country\nare speaking up and taking action to stop corporations from offshoring more\njobs. Or just text CWA CALL to 69866. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">More than 30 Years Ago, Women Sued\nthe AP for Gender Discrimination \u2014 And Won <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 30 years ago, seven\nwomen journalists, with the help of what is now the News Media\nGuild\/NewsGuild-CWA Local 31222, filed a lawsuit against the <em>Associated Press<\/em>,\nwinning a $2 million settlement that provided for back pay, training, promotion\ngoals, and bonuses for AP&#8217;s female and black journalists. When the women sued,\nthe average annual salary for male reporters was about $20,000 compared to\nabout $16,000 for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NewsGuild-CWA interviewed\nthe women as part of its ongoing equal pay project, which includes analyses of\npay at publications including <em>The\nPhiladelphia Inquirer<\/em> and <em>The\nWashington Post<\/em>. Women and minorities are still not at the\nsame pay level. I can say with some measure of satisfaction that huge steps\nhave been taken&#8230;But c&#8217;mon, what is it, 40 years? We can do better.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">CWA Next Generation Members in\nDistrict 3 Building Organizing Skills <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, 24 CWA members\nfrom eight states across District 3 spent two days learning and practicing\npolitical action and organizing skills. CWA Local 3808 in Nashville, Tenn.,\nhosted a CWA Next Generation Activist Training, which was jointly sponsored by\nCWA Next Gen and D3. The training focused on helping participants build\npractical organizing skills and giving them opportunities to roleplay\none-on-one conversations with fellow members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked why the Next Gen\nprogram is so important to our union, participant Eli Stanfield said, &#8220;The\nunion is intergenerational, from workers in their first jobs to elders with\ndecades of organizing experience. Next Gen provides an opportunity to pass on\nthat wisdom to the next generation of union leaders.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked why he is active\nin the union, participant Dan Warren-Castillo said, &#8220;I&#8217;m active because I\nfeel like my future is tied up with the future of the labor movement. Joe Gosiger, a CWA staff rep, testified about how the company&#8217;s lack of investment, understaffing, and unreasonable metrics have contributed to CenturyLink&#8217;s failure to maintain its copper infrastructure and how it is jeopardizing service quality and posing significant safety hazards to utility employees and the public.<br><br>CWA members are urging the Commission to adopt strong quality of service and consumer protection rules to protect New Mexico customers&#8217; access to basic telecommunications services.
